Tips for Caring for Implants Once Inserted

Tips for Caring for Implants Once Inserted

Home hygiene should be done daily with the help of a toothbrush, followed by rinsing the oral cavity with mouthwash.

Useful tips that SHOULD NOT be done if you have dental implants:

  • do not bite nails, writing instruments, lollipops, do not open glass caps, and do not crack seeds;
  • do not consume very hot liquids (the implant being made of titanium, transmits heat around it and this leads to the loss of bone quality);
  • do not smoke (nicotine drastically reduces blood flow);
  • do not use vibrating electric toothbrushes! Due to vibrations, the crown on the implant begins to loosen and over time can lead to implant loss;
  • do not use dental floss around the implant because it leads to peri-implantitis (if used, do not insert more than one to two millimeters subgingivally).

Even if you have fixed work on implants (i.e., attached to implants) or mobile work (implant prosthesis or threaded), you should visit the dental clinic for professional cleaning every four to six months. At Perfect Dental, we perform advanced cleaning by a hygienist or doctor, meaning we do not start cleaning without panoramic radiographic interpretation to see the status of the implants. Cleaning is done with a special variable vibration scaler. We use air-flow (water + air + special powder for implants). Instead of metal loops, we use Teflon loops to avoid scratching the implant surface.

My advice is: prevention is better than treatment! If you want more information about dental implants, do not hesitate to ask us!

I wish you good health! Dr. Venczel
